Charlene sells herself from the heating grate on 38th
Pray we can get her into the van, & back to the
Shelter before it's too late
There she is, Let me out and circle the block
real slow
If she's not too high this time, she just might
go with us
Charlene Charlene, do you remember me, I'm a friend
She say's "Girl whatchu doin' out here on
the West End?"
Brought you some coffee from the Shelter, and a ham
and cheese
How you doin' Char, won't you talk to me please
She says "I'm doin' fine, most of the time"
Cause Jesus loves me, and keeps me safe from harm
Together we fly above 38th. He's my luck charm
Me and Jesus, fly all over this town
Angels stay to watch over me earn my keep
Out on the street, hold'n my corner down.
Charlene says "thanks for the coffee, you're
not like the rest"
Show up once a year "Decked out in their
Sunday best"
With a little makeup you know girl we could be
a team
Oh, don't get all upset now, I'm just joking, did
you bring any cream
I say Char "Aren't you afraid you'll die
or disappear?"
So many working women will never make it out of
here
" Tonight you could sleep so warm, safe and
dry"
Oh, come to the Shelter, trust me, just give it
a try.
Her eyes get wild and she starts to scream
Trust me? You'd bust me.
Who are you with all your fancy talk
Afraid of her, I make it to the fan at the cross
walk
My timing was all wrong, it's such a thin line.
I know you can't win'em all, better luck next
time.
But I'll keep on trying to help Charlene..
